Emma Mattson

Yoga Stockholm

Emma was born and raised in Sweden but has been living abroad for many years. She was first introduced to yoga by a colleague and fell in love after her very first class. After many years working in the fashion industry, and realizing just how important yoga had become to her, she decided to follow her heart and do what she love most and invest in herself. She became a certified Bikram Yoga teacher during the summer of 2017 and has since then been teaching at Bikram Yoga City in Stockholm. Emma is very curious about all things Yoga! She loves to explore and try all different forms of yoga and asanas, meditation and mindfulness.

What drives you?

What drives me is that feeling during my yoga practice when I have the complete mind and body connection. In todays society we are often 'up in the head' and forget what our body needs or what our body is trying to tell us. When I get on my mat, it's just me, my breath, my body. I'm working hard on stillness in the postures. That one second of complete stillness and awareness between the inhale and the exhale. That is what drives me and gets me on my yogamat every day.
What’s next in training?

I think training will become more than just training. It's becoming a lifestyle. What we train or how we train effects our minds and how we think the rest of the day. It effects what we eat, our mentality towards ourselves and to others.

What makes you happy?

What makes me happy is of course practicing my yoga, but also when I teach and see students learning new things about their body and mind. There really is nothing like the energy and happiness I get from teaching a crowded and sweaty Bikram Yoga class and seeing the appreciation on the students faces after class. I'm so happy that I'm working with what I love most.

How do you create balance in your life?

I believe the easiest way to create balance in your life is to listen to your body. It will tell you what you need. Some days you might need an intense and sweaty yoga practice. Some days you may need to just lie down on your mat and meditate. Just like some days you might need a glass of wine and dancing, and some days you might need a kale sallad and an early night sleep. Connect with your body and you will know what you need.

What’s one piece of kit you could not live without?

My yoga mat. Where ever I place my mat is where I can find peace. Right now I'm loving my sustainable cork mat by Casall.

What are your goals for the future?

Even though I work as a yoga teacher, I'm forever going to be a student. There is so much to learn. Every class I teach or every practice I do myself I've learnt something new about myself. I want to take it all in. I want to lear and become the best teacher and the best version of me possible.

Who inspires you and why?

My colleagues at Bikram Yoga City in Stockholm are my biggest inspirations, they teach me so much about myself and about yoga every day.
The students that come to practice and the strong focus they bring into the studio is also such an inspiration to me.

I also find inspiration and motivation from social media today, Rachel Brathen (also known as Yoga Girl) inspires me and teaches me that being true to yourself can take you to amazing places and that anything is possible as long as you believe it with your whole heart.
