Julia Martinsson

Yoga Stockholm

Julia is a certified yoga teacher passionate about making this fast-paced world a more harmonious and happy place. She wants to inspire people to a more balanced and joyful life. Apart from yoga she loves to go out for a run, to experiment with vegetarian and vegan food in the kitchen and to make (and eat) extra-everything-breakfasts.

What drives you?

I want to inspire people to live in harmony with their own body, both on the inside (through sharing tools that help to recharge and unwind) and the outside (through the physical aspects of yoga and other activities). I am driven by inspiring others to let go of external performance requirements, to focus inwards and build a strong body and mind. Let’s come back to our natural state of joy. Let’s connect and empower each other!

What's next in training?

For many decades the focus has been on high intensity workouts, about running faster, lifting heavier and constantly getting more physically fit. I believe that it is equally important to train your inside, your mind. Therefore I believe that over the next few years people will want to focus more on the combination of psychical and mental training and bring some yin to their yang. Yoga will become increasingly popular, also as a complement to other types of sports and activities. In a society where the demands are getting harder and higher, we need to create a space where you can completely be yourself and relax.

What makes you happy?

Savasana after a tough yoga class and the feeling when you come home after a long run in the sun! Also, spreading yoga and seeing my students evolve is one of the best things in the world.

How do you create balance in your life?

By doing yoga, running and working on my physical strength but never forgetting to also look inwards. I try to listen to what my body needs and to not neglect the need to reflect and relax. This has been a game changer for me. When I started to listen inwards I realized that I had been pushing myself and my body so hard for so many years. Now, my mental practice is as important as the physical one and helps me to take care of myself.

Also, I try to not create any strict boundaries when it comes to food. Everyone is different but balancing green smoothies with chocolate is what works best for me.

What’s one piece of kit you could not live without?

My waterbottle! I always bring it with me in my bag and panic if I realize I’ve forgotten it. And of course my yoga mat, it is the perfect place to unwind and recharge my batteries even if it’s only for a couple of minutes! I try to live by the mantra that 5 minutes is better than zero – the best training is the one that gets done.

What are your goals for the future?

To continue to practice and teach yoga and develop both personally and professionally. I want to bring some more peace into this world and I believe yoga is a great way to start.

Who inspires you and why?

Everyone who dares to go their own way, who dares to challenge the norms and pursue their own dream, regardless of what “society thinks”. I want to create a life that I want to live, not a life that everyone else thinks I should live.
