Maria Clara Irisarri

Ballet London

My name is Clara and I’m a professional ballet dancer from Argentina. In my career I have performed most popular ballet pieces and have also danced with stars like Beyonce and Madonna. I live in London where I run a modern ballet company called Neoballet and we produce innovative performances. As a multi career person myself (I am also a designer) I like challenge people to do more than one thing, to think outside the box, and get out of their comfort zone often.

What drives you?

I am driven by the power of creation and transformation. I love making new things and embracing change. As an athlete you learn in the early years how to push boundaries and to keep going despites the odds and limitations, and as a ballerina a strong work ethic has been ingrained in me, I just love working hard.

What’s next in training?

I’m not sure what’s next. I see a big trend in people becoming more muscular on one side, but also yoga and flexibility are becoming more and more popular. Combining workouts with being mindful is the way to go. I’d like to see a future where training is an essential part of our mental health as well.

What makes you happy?

I am happier when I create things that add value to the world and when I’m able to contribute, help or improve things. I am also happier when I feel healthy and in shape, when I feel that I can move freely.

How do you create balance in your life?

I always say there is no such thing as work life balance, that there is only life. I create balance by allowing my mind and body to have rest when they need it. As an athlete we are constantly pursuing excellence and pushing to cross personal boundaries. But it is equally important to understand that resting and space are also part of what will make our performance excel. So I pay attention to the little signs my body gives me.

What’s one piece of kit you could not live without?

Hair bands and hair pins. I like to have the hair off my face.

Who inspires you and why?

I have always been inspired by the people close to me. My parents, my ballet master, the dancers I train with. They all have strong work ethics, they push for excellence, and have quite a tough approach towards training and commitments in general; and I believe that is how you get to perform your best, with a solid work structure and discipline.

What are your goals for the future?

For the future I would like to have an even healthier lifestyle as I have a bit of a sweet tooth. So I really want to incorporate more fruits and veggies into my diet. Then with my company Neoballet, I’m producing an immersive and interactive dance performance, so that is definitely something I am also looking forward to seeing.
