Yohanna Mannelqvist

Yoga Tulum

My names is Yohanna, a fashion corporate dropout, pursuing a new reality dedicated to yoga, holistic health and travel. I'm living in beautiful Tulum where I work as a Yoga Teacher and now studying to become a certified Health Coach.

What drives you?

I respond well to challenges and I constantly put up goals to achieve. My goals were often aesthetic when I was younger but that has slowly changed. Today, it is more important to me how I feel rather than how I look. Having a defined and toned body is still a part of my motivation but it is not the main driving force. My daily form shows how successful I have been - sleep, mood, appearance and physical health.

What’s next in training?

There will always be trends within training and I am open to try new concepts to keep my training regime exciting. EMS has become increasingly popular in London and I have tried it myself without being a huge fan. I strongly believe that there are no shortcuts to a healthy body and I prefer my training to be functional. Using every day functional movement patterns like pushing, pulling, hinging, squatting, rotating, carrying, walking and running is natural to the body and this sort of training will help us in our daily life.

Being able to control my body is an amazing feeling and that is why I have recently gotten in to aerial sports such as hoop, pole and slings.

I believe that mental training and meditation will be come increasingly important, not only for us yogis, but also for the gym bunnies. Reducing cortisol and stress levels in the body while sleeping better improves any sport performance in the long run.

What makes you happy?

Waking up feeling strong and healthy and having time to spend with family and friends makes me happy. I travel as often as I can, both privately and professionally. I love cooking and having friends over to entertain.

How do you create balance in your life?

I practise yoga and train equally for my mental and physical health. Yoga is key to keep me balanced and my practice has helped me through rough times in life! I practice yoga or train other sports such as boxing, HIIT and pilates, at least 5 times per week. I also try to spend a lot of time in nature and with animals as I find it very healing. I have recently picked up riding again and I love being back in the stable! Who knew that my Casall yoga tights would be the perfect pair of riding pants? :)

What’s one piece of kit you could not live without?

The answer is so easy - my Casall “Knitted Brushed Tights”. They fit like a glove and I literally live in mine!

What are your goals for the future?

I am about to do a 200 h RYT Yoga Teacher Training Course with Rachel Brathen in Aruba in end of October and I am looking forward to exploring yoga/health/fitness as a career path. I want to deepen my yoga practice while continuing to build strength through my weight training and boxing.

Who inspires you and why?

I really enjoy training with Shona Vertue in London. She was the person who got me in to Yoga on a serious level and we met at the Bodyism resort at D-Maris in Turkey. She is an old gymnast and incredible strong and flexible. She is very true and genuine to her yoga practise but she also lift weights and do HIIT which is quite rare for yogis. She promotes a strong, healthy and functional body which is a training philosophy that I share.
